Gilbert Rohde for Herman Miller - Secretary & Bookcase
Secretary: $3,500 (39 1/8"H x 40"W x 16"D closed / 27"D open)
Bookcase: $2,400 (39 1/8"H x 40"W x 10 3/4"D)
circa 1940
United States

Gilbert Rohde designed these pieces for Herman Miller not long before he passed away in 1944.

Montag (the dog formerly known as Chad) watches the front door. The bookcase shelves are fixed.

The secretary flips open to reveal the dark brown stain of the interior with cubby holes, one drawer, and a single swing out door. Below the writing surface is an additional, dark stained shelf.

The original lucite pulls are in excellent condition.

The tops and sides are contrasting bands of wood.

The top of the bookcase was stripped and refinished. Otherwise, all surfaces have the original finish with natural wear. There's Brian.

The secretary has four lower drawers, including this file drawer with adjustable, wooden divider. Note that the tracks are all wood too.

The leaf slides out in addition to flipping down, to extend the work surface.

The orginal tag is still taped to the bottom of the top drawer.

We found this photograph tucked inside one of the cubby holes. She looks like a nice lady.
